About the brand
Located in the heart of Aix, at 14 rue Espariat, the store is just steps away from one of Provence’s most historic squares, the Place d’Albertas. Bastide’s husband and wife co-founders, Frédéric Fekkai and Shirin von Wulffen, collaborated with local architect Amelia Tavella, the recipient of the 2016 Best Young Female Architect of France Award. In keeping with Bastide’s dedication to promoting artisanship, local artisans were carefully selected to create the atmosphere of a bastide, a typical country-house from the south of France, where families gather to share good food and laughter. In the 450-square foot space, with lime-washed walls, products are displayed on floating, hand-carved stone shelves, creating room for the center piece – a giant lavoir carved out of a single block of stone which pays homage to the ancient communal washing place where villagers once gathered to socialize. The hand-hewn materials, sand-stone arches and mineral tones create a soothing, refreshing entryway where guests are invited to come in, slow down, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life or la vie bastide.
Bastide is a natural beauty and lifestyle collection inspired by the wellness philosophy of Provence and founded on a commitment to clean, toxin-free living. Formulated with herbs, flowers, oils and honey from the region’s lush terroir, Bastide’s sensorial products for skin, body and home are all made in local workshops by our beautisans: beauty artisans who are category experts and whose roots go generations deep. Bastide celebrates the essence of Provence: to live beautifully, simply, and authentically. The current product assortment includes fine fragrances, home ambiance, skin care, hand & body care, and bath, with prices ranging from $8 - $130.
Aix-en-Provence (Latin: Aquae Sextiae) was founded by the Romans in 123 BC and named after the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who was drawn to the region’s remarkable thermal springs. The city is now renowned as the City of Fountains. Aix water is naturally enriched with trace minerals such as calcium or magnesium and is a fundamental ingredient of Bastide formulas.
