Completely Refreshed: Vanity revamp for spring
Spring is right around the corner and that means it’s time to organize and refresh your space! First step? The vanity. There is no better feeling than waking up in the morning, heading over to your vanity with a cup of coffee and getting ready in peace. It’s also a great time to swap out your darker lipsticks to brighter colors, and your heavier scents to a lighter fragrance to officially say goodbye to winter. Get ready to not only achieve a beautiful vanity but a layout that will have you looking forward to getting ready every morning for the sunnier days ahead.
Lay it All Out
Even for the extremely organized, once you lay out every beauty item you have in your vanity, you’ll be surprised at the things you had forgotten about.
Step 1: Group the products into appropriate categories to make it easier to sift through.
Step 2: Once grouped, examine each product.
We’re taking Marie Kondo’s approach to organization. If it doesn’t make you happy or feel good, it might be time to part ways with it. We’re all guilty of holding onto a fragrance that we don’t truly enjoy or a trend piece that seemed like a great idea at the time. It’s okay. Spring is coming and it’s an excellent time to shed old things and make room for the new!
When to Say Goodbye
After the products have been grouped, make a donation pile and a throw-away pile.
Another great way is to have your friends come over and have them sift through your pile. As the saying goes...one woman’s wrong lipstick shade is another woman’s perfect match (or something like that).
Sadly, even the highest quality of makeup has an expiration date. Here are some general rules of thumb:
- Liquid foundations and concealers last for about six months
- Powder products can last for up to two years, this is because bacteria cannot grow without water.
- Any eye-related products have a shorter shelf life due to being in close contact with your eyes. Mascara is especially susceptible to bacteria as the tube is dark and moist, the ideal condition for bacteria to grow. They usually only last for about 3 months.
- Since pencil eyeliners and powder eye shadows are dry products, they can usually last up to two years.
Another hack to tell when your makeup is expired is to search for a small picture of an opened jar with a number and the letter “M” on the product container. This symbol is called the “period after opening” date and would mean that if it said “14M,” the product is good for about 14 months after opening the product.
Time to Get Squeaky Clean
Now, it’s time to wash your brushes! Brushes should be washed once a week but let’s be real, life can get in the way. So set aside some time to deep clean your brushes! The Beautyblender Liquid Blender Cleanser is phenomenal in thoroughly cleaning your brushes but without damaging the softness or quality of the brushes.
Step 1: Apply an ample amount of the cleanser to the makeup brush and massage the bristles, working into a lather.
Step 2: Rinse with clean water until there is no makeup or cleanser left on the brush.
Step 3: Line them up against a wall with a towel or thick paper towel underneath the brush hairs. This is an important step as you want the water to drain properly instead of trickling back into the brush and tampering with the glue that holds everything together.
Switching Things Up
The easiest way to prepare for a new season is by swapping out your makeup and fragrances. Need some inspiration? We have 4 lipsticks and fragrances that are perfect for the springtime and it just so happens that they will look super cute on your vanity!
The new Chantecaille Lip Chic in Passion Flower is THE coral shade for the season. The texture is glossy and lightweight, and hydrates the lips with hyaluronic acid. The hummingbird detailing on the case is also adorable and each sale goes towards the Amazon Conservation Team in preserving the hummingbird’s rainforest habitat.
We have a feeling that the Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color in Neutral Rose is going to be your go-to neutral-mauve color. It provides a beautiful pigment and the formula dramatically boosts your lip’s moisture levels. One swipe and you’re ready to go!
It’s always hard to say goodbye to a deep red lip, but alas...spring has sprung! The Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in Nu Interdit will have you bouncing back in no time! This matte formula lasts all day long and is non-drying, comfortable to wear, and never spills over the lip line. This pretty pink nude shade will match perfectly with your spring wardrobe and warmer days.
Lastly, bring on the lip gloss! For a natural and dewy look on the lips, Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Lip Gloss in Dream Stone will be your new best friend. The shade Dream Stone is that perfect shade of pink that adds a healthy-looking rosiness to the lips.
Now on to the scents! When you think of spring, which smells come to mind? If it’s sunshine, flowers, and fresh rain, Jo Malone London Honeysuckle & Davana Cologne is the one for you. This fragrance has a wonderful harmony of sweetness with earthy undertones.
Tom Ford Rose Prick and Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’eau A la Rose are both rose-scented perfumes but in completely different ways. Both are brand new additions to the brand and are equally amazing.
If you like a classic rose scent, you will fall head over heels for Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’eau A la Rose. It smells exactly like a fresh rose bouquet. If you’ve never been a huge fan of rose-scented fragrances, you have to try Tom Ford Rose Pick. It sounds odd, but it’s spicy and rosy at the same time, and it works. The notes are Bulgarian rose, Sichuan pepper, and roasted tonka!
Not really into a rose or light scents? Try Killian Rolling in Love! It’s still appropriate for spring with notes of iris but makes it a richer fragrance with almond milk and musk. This perfume would be a great fit for an evening cocktail out on a rooftop patio.
Time for the final touches to your vanity! Some easy ways to refresh the surface items on your vanity are: change up your brush holder, add some dried flowers, and display a few beauty products that make you happy.
For brush holders, there are many that you can buy, but going to your local vintage store can be a great option for finding unique glassware that you otherwise wouldn’t find in stores.
Another great option for unique brush holders would be to repurpose your old candles. Toss your burned out candle in the freezer overnight which will help loosen the wax from the jar. In the morning, take a blunt knife and carve around the outside perimeter of the wax and it should pop right off! To finish off, just take some hot water and rinse the jar thoroughly.
An ideal situation would be to have fresh spring flowers on your vanity every week, but we totally understand if this might be too much work. A great alternative would be to place some dried lavender in a vase. It smells very calming and is completely care-free!
For adding beauty products to your vanity, the Jenny Patinkin Rose on Rose Face Roller or Clé de Peau Beauté The Serum are not only great products but work great as decor pieces. Instead of having a decorative crystal, the Jenny Patinkin Rose on Rose Face Roller is made out of rose quartz gemstones which are believed to emit energetic vibrations of beauty and love! It’s also great to have handy in the mornings to depuff and roll out sleep lines. The Clé de Peau Beauté Le Sérum comes in a unique holographic bottle and is stunning when it catches the sunlight. This serum is also great in supporting the luminosity of the skin.
One last and easy tip for feeling ready for spring: sneak a bottle of HUM Daily Cleanse in your most used vanity drawer. This supplement helps with detoxifying your body and will give your skin a nice glow.
