Ladies, It's Our Year!

To celebrate International Women's Day we chatted the future, business advice and all things girl-power with the women who are shaping beauty, our female founders!

"I was an only child, and I spent hours looking at plants and flowers under a microscope. That really is where my love and appreciation for florals and botanicals began. I also formed an eye for color and beauty through my parents - we were always in museums admiring and exploring art.

My love for beauty began at 13 years old when my mother decided to take me to her facialist. After the facial, she put makeup on me, and when I got up from the chair I thought, 'oh, this is great' - I was hooked!"

"The best advice I would give my younger self would be: to never settle, or give up on what you really want and believe in!"

Life is constantly changing and it’s only heading in a more positive direction for women today. Right now, the world is your oyster and it is an even better time than ever to move into the space you want to be in … to be an equal."

"As I got older I learned to trust myself and to really listen. I would tell myself 'you’re on the right track and there is something there that’s trying to guide you, you just need to trust it'. Trust that your intuition will become your strongest ally along the way."

"I grew up in Colombia with a very entrepreneurial family. My mother was an entrepreneur and my grandmother absolutely loved beauty. She would host weekly “spa parties” using DIY masks and products I helped her make in the kitchen. I loved the time we spent together creating and crafting, and then having an afternoon with so many women. I think it was a combination of both of those things as a child that made me into a beauty entrepreneur later in life."

"My grandmother, she told me old stories about the usage of plants to heal and help diseases and also the beauty secrets of old times. I always wanted to use this knowledge and combine it with modern technologies to get natural, effective and luxurious products."

"Lily Garfield was among the first women I met in the beauty industry after cold calling her. She took a chance on picking up my line. I made sure to meet with her whenever I could to talk about the beauty industry and pick her brain."

"Do it for the consumer you want to provide a solution for, never ever for your own advancement... It takes a team and serious hard work for any endeavor to succeed. Stay focused on the solution you are providing, find good people who share your vision, work hard and the sky is the limit."

"Make time for the things you love. I live by the golden rule: treat customers like family. I've always wanted my customers to have the best of the best, but it has to be fun too! It's the kid in a candy store mentality."

"When I started [KNC Beauty,] I felt I was all on my own, but it was because I wasn’t reaching out. It’s important to communicate with people and let them know that you need help. Everyone starts somewhere and as women it’s important that we help each other!"

"My grandmother, Estée, was my biggest influence. She was creative, daring and distinguished. She was the first person to spark that beauty awareness in me as a child. She was a brilliant businesswoman and taught me to make personal connections with my customers. She always said, ‘I got here by working for it’ and that is a meaningful quote I live by."

"I truly believe the future is female and there is nothing that an empowered woman cannot do! But patience is a virtue, if you have an idea, have the patience to see it through. It might be scary, it may put a strain on your finances, your relationships, your job, who knows! But if you don’t try you will never know. All young female entrepreneurs owe it to themselves to find out. Surround yourself with people that not only encourage you but can offer you an alternative point of view and opinion. That will help you see the big picture and help you achieve those goals."

"It starts with learning from mistakes. No one gets everything right 100% of the time, so I would say first and foremost- don’t give up but also, don’t despair."

"There will be times when you have to stand up against people who attack you because of your success. Don’t look right or left, stay strong and keep going and working for what you believe in. The future belongs to you, to us, to women."

"I think this is an exciting time for female entrepreneurs! There is so much opportunity to punch above your weight using social media. I think a good idea, tenacity and a bit of luck are the ultimate ingredients to success."

"There is no such thing as failure. Every experience provides learning. If one door closes, another one opens. Do not let ego impact decisions. Be open to feedback."

"Being an entrepreneur is a state of mind: a lot of work, a lot of stress, but also a lot of happiness when the seed develops into a beautiful and strong tree. Many years after, it is now my daughter Marion who manages the company and gives a modern vision. My granddaughters are beauty addicts, and being part of the By Terry success team is a dream for them, and that makes me dream, too."
